瀬田の唐橋

One of the three old bridges in Japan and has existed since 7th century. This was the only bridge to enter Kyoto from the east until 1889 unless making a long detour to the south or crossing Biwako lake. As such, the bridge wasn’t only be an important traffic hub but also a critical defense point for Kyoto – the bridge was burned a number of times for military purpose but then every time reconstructed at the original location. You can see this bridge from Shikansen on the right when you are close to Kyoto.
